As Alfie Moon faces prostate cancer surgery, is the EastEnders legend leaving Walford?

Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) in EastEnders is facing the devastating news that he has prostate cancer, and life is looking very bad for him.

Following examinations, he was shown in recent episodes assuring Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) and Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) that he was cleared to depart, yet it would subsequently be revealed that he had lied to Phil during a confrontation.

As the heroine prepares for a prostatectomy, Kellie Bright’s character Linda Carter is on her way to the hospital to encourage her.

But could this spell the end for the fan favourite from Walford? Shane Richie stated as follows:

Is Alfie Moon leaving EastEnders?

Alfie Moon will be departing EastEnders after receiving heartbreaking news, and he will be spending time in Spain recovering from his surgery.

But because Shane Richie’s departure from the programme isn’t mentioned, it seems that Alfie is still around.

The 59-year-old actor made hints about the character’s return to Walford during an appearance on The One Show. He even hinted at the possibility of future sparks between him and his ex-wife Kat (Jessie Wallace).

“Maybe something will happen next year,” he remarked. “But we’re not sure.”

Alfie’s illness was discovered after his son Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall) attacked him, causing Phil (Steve McFadden) to force him to see the hospital.

Alfie tells Phil the truth after first lying to him about the findings, but not before arguing with him over his one-night affair with Emma Harding (Patsy Kensit).

Shane said The One Show EastEnders “has a history” of exposing significant medical issues, and that this one was “so important to tell.” However, he acknowledged that the plot has been difficult.

He said that he had spent an afternoon conversing with Jonathan Hall, a man who had previously shared his personal experience on the show and was diagnosed with prostate cancer three years ago.

“In the end, I was a complete mess.”

Upon finishing it, I recall thinking, “Wow, this is such an important story to tell.”

“And because people have known Alfie Moon for over 21 years, it may not have had the same impact if they had chosen a different character for that specific story.”

Thursday at 7.30 p.m. on BBC One, EastEnders returns.
