This month on EastEnders, Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) will get a shock from the past when ex-boyfriend Duncan Boyd (David Gillespie) reappears in her life without warning.

Duncan, a character from the BBC One soap opera from the late 1980s, served as the curate of the nearby church, where Sharon often sought refuge in order to escape the turmoil of her life at The Vic when Den and Angie’s marriage broke down.

To Den’s dismay, Sharon quickly began to have emotions for the reverend after finding him to be a helpful friend. The two later were engaged to be married, but Sharon called off the nuptials after Duncan received a job offer from a parish in Wiltshire.

Later this month, when he prepares to conduct Albie’s baptism, the character—who was last seen in 1989—returns to television. He is shocked to learn that his ex-girlfriend, Sharon, is the boy’s mother when he enters The Vic.

Talk about an eagerly anticipated reunion!

Duncan’s stay in Walford is brief, but in classic Albert Square style, his presence raises some eyebrows when details about his previous love relationship with Sharon are revealed.

Actor David Gillespie spoke on his comeback 34 years later, saying, “I have to say what a delight it was being back in EastEnders and renewing my part as Duncan after almost 30 years of leaving the show – a bit weird at first but “pleasant strange.”

The only people I knew were my old friends Letitia Dean and Gillian Taylforth, but I was immediately made to feel at home by the fantastic cast and crew, which included many new acquaintances. Fabulous!’

Duncan made his television debut in 1987’s EastEnders and would go on to star in around 50 episodes of the BBC One soap over a two-year span (Image: BBC).

Chris Clenshaw, the show’s executive producer, said, ‘It’s lovely to have David back to the character of Duncan Boyd. Even though it has been more than three decades since we last saw Duncan, his persona and Sharon, one of the show’s most recognisable matriarchs, have a love past.

“We’re happy to have him back for a little while as he unintentionally causes drama between the happy couple,” says the audience.

Monday through Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, EastEnders airs.
