As soon as Roy Cropper (David Neilson) becomes ill, there’s an emergency at the Coronation Street café, and Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman), Roy’s closest friend, steps in to try to rescue the day.
This year, Evelyn and Roy’s bond has grown significantly. Roy sent Evelyn a bundle of letters written to his close friends and family a few months before to his surgery.
Evelyn being Evelyn, the desire to read her letter was too strong, even though he instructed her to distribute the letters exclusively in case anything went wrong during the procedure.
She examined the envelope, which she placed over a hot kettle, and was moved to read Roy’s comments, which explained how much Evelyn meant to him.
Roy stood by Evelyn a few days earlier when she confronted the owner of an illegal puppy farm.
Maureen Lipman said us, “Everyone who loves her is attempting to stop her from following him because he threatens Evelyn twice and he is pretty dangerous and thuggish.”
The performer portraying him is excellent. There were a few instances when we had a fight coordinator on standby. Even though Evelyn is visibly terrified, she won’t acknowledge it. But since she loves Tyrone so much, it becomes very problematic when he threatens to injure him if she doesn’t stop. She understands that in order to keep her family safe, she must step aside.
As Christmas approaches, Evelyn will advise Tyrone (Alan Halsall) to take the girls to Norfolk to see Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) while she celebrates with Roy in subsequent episodes.
When Evelyn realizes that Cassie (Claire Sweeney) is left on her own, she grudgingly extends an invitation for her to accompany them.
Afterwards, Roy had a back spasm at the café.
Sue Devaney’s character Debbie assists Roy upstairs while Evelyn gets a pinny and tells Roy she’ll cover for him.
Cassie then suggests a present that Roy should give Evelyn since she knows the two pals are close. But what will Evelyn’s reaction be on the actual big day?
