Producer Sophie Roper has joined the Emmerdale crew.

Newcomer Sophie, who has previously worked on Coronation Street, will share creative responsibility for the ITV soap opera’s plot, casting, and production process with fellow producer Laura Shaw.

She will be working alongside Iain MacLeod, the Executive Producer for Continuing Drama, and John Whiston, the Managing Director of Continuing Drama, Head of ITV in the North, and ITV’s Drama Commissioner. She will be a member of the production team.

“Sophie is a real talent and has a natural eye for a big, bold story so she is the perfect person to maintain Emmerdale’s tradition of challenging, exciting narratives,” Iain remarked in reference to Sophie’s arrival. She is a more senior member of the really brilliant team in Leeds, and I am happy that she has taken the well-deserved step up into her new post. Viewers can expect an exciting, thrilling, and emotional voyage.

“After a brilliant tenure as Story Producer, we’re thrilled Sophie will be joining Laura to Produce Emmerdale, bringing to the role a wealth of creative storytelling and passion for the show,” said Huw Kennair-Jones, Drama Commissioner for ITV. There definitely won’t be a boring moment when it comes to what she has in store for the villagers, and I can’t wait to see it!

Since Kate Brooks departed the soap opera in April of this year to take a position as the newest producer on Coronation Street, Sophie has been in her new position.

She has been employed by Emmerdale since 2016 and is leaving her position as Story Producer.

Sophie was a member of the team who created the plots for the 2015 live episode of Coronation Street, in which Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) murdered Callum Logan. After that, his corpse was buried under the floor of Gail’s (Helen Worth) “granny-flat” addition, where it remained hidden for over a full year.

She also added to the story of Pat Phelan, the serial murderer.

Sophie expressed her gratitude to be a part of the beloved and legendary soap opera, saying, “As a lifelong fan, I feel privileged to be taking the show forward as Producer, alongside an incredibly talented and dedicated team.”

“I look forward to bringing more bold and ground breaking drama to the Dales as we embark on this next chapter. Emmerdale is truly a special place, both on and off screen.”

Additionally, Sophie made a contribution to the ongoing narrative surrounding serial murderer Pat Phelan (Image: ITV).

The storylines for Meena’s (Paige Sandhu) entrance in the village and her homicidal spree, Faith Dingle’s (Sally Dexter) cancer plotline, and Maya Stepney’s (Louisa Clein) grooming of Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant) in Emmerdale have all been developed with Sophie’s assistance.

The Coronation Street and Emmerdale crews have seen a lot of change recently, so in case you need a reminder, here are the updates:

Laura Shaw and Sophie Roper are currently Emmerdale’s producers. Kate Brooks, the former soap opera producer, is now in charge of Coronation Street, while her replacement, Iain MacLeod, is now the Executive Producer of ITV’s Continuing Drama.
