Recently, it was revealed that Lewis Cope’s enigmatic Emmerdale character Nicky the Ever Smiling Nanny was really the son of Caleb Milligan (William Ash) and the grandson of Frank Tate. Caleb and Nicky are working on a covert plot to get vengeance on Kim (Claire King) for her role in Frank’s murder.
Nicky has another responsibility while Caleb is busy assembling all of Kim’s business holdings so that they would all fall into his hands when the time is perfect. The only purpose of his affair with Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham) has been to get access to any Tate assets that could be in Gabby’s or her son Thomas’ hands.
We have seen a difference in Nicky ever since this strategy was made public to the audience. He has made it quite plain to Caleb that, far from being his dream lady, he thinks Gabby repulsive and foolish and that he can’t wait to never have to see her again, replacing the continual smile with a regularly brusque, unfriendly attitude.
This explains his surprise when he learned that they would need to provide 28 days’ notice before a wedding could take place in Wednesday’s episode (April 19). He was plainly nervous about having to play the enamoured fiancé for the next month.
He then proposed the idea of eloping. He said, “We might get married as soon as next week.”
Is there anything you’re holding back from me? He responded to Gabby’s questions by stating that he couldn’t wait to become Mr. Gabby and that all the pomp and circumstance wasn’t really that significant. Being together was what mattered.
No of this was acceptable to Gabby. She urged, her eyes beginning to well up with tears at the prospect of going down the aisle in front of everyone she loves. “I have dreamed of my wedding day since I was a little girl,” she said.
When she continued, “I always thought my dad would give me away,” even Nicky felt his one, working heartstring being pulled. She said, “I’m sure my dad, Ashley, would be looking down on me and be happy that I have ‘the most sweet, amazing, loving man by my side.'”
Naturally, if Ashley were gazing down, he would be exclaiming, “Nooooo!” However, Gabby’s sincere remarks were sufficient to dissuade Nicky from fantasising about a hasty nuptial.
Gabby said, “Something as important as that can’t be rushed,” as Nicky mutely gritted his teeth.
Thursday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. on ITV1 and ITVX, Emmerdale resumes.
