ITV Coronation Street soap legend predicts show’s demise, as he criticises ‘average’ acting and gruelling schedules

Coronation Street star Charlie Lawson has warned that the ITV soap could be axed within the next decade as he gave a scathing review of some of the acting

Charlie Lawson, a longtime fixture of Coronation Street, has made a dire prediction about the iconic soap opera, speculating that it may end in the next 10 years.

Since 1989, the actor has been well recognised for his portrayal of Jim McDonald. He feels that the show’s senior cast members’ weariness and poor performances are turning off longtime fans, raising concerns that Weatherfield may not make it through the next ten years.

Charlie and colleague actress Sarah Lancashire discussed their concerns during the memorial funeral for late Corrie writer John Stevenson. According to The Daily Star, he voiced his worries, saying, “I worry that ‘Corrie’ would not exist in 10 years. I was conversing with Sarah. John wouldn’t recognise the show, we both agreed.”

He continued to express his disgust with the show’s present status in an interview with The Sun on Sunday, saying, “We felt it was a completely different animal, so fundamentally different from our day – and the viewing figures have plummeted.”

Charlie also brought attention to the high expectations that are put on veteran performers like Sue Nicholls (Audrey Roberts) and Barbara Knox (Rita Tanner), with hints that they may emulate Helen Worth (Gail Platt), who is leaving the role after an amazing fifty years of playing Gail.

He ended by reflecting somberly on the state of affairs behind the scenes, saying, “The burden is enormous. With such a large cast, there isn’t as much time for pleasure or getting to know everyone.

“I wouldn’t be shocked if a few of the senior cast members quit as well. It’s not the pleasant ship it used to be, and I know they’re not happy.

“The young people in ‘Corrie’ have an obligation to strive towards upholding their foundation.” But I fear that the majority of them never will. While some of the younger cast members provide excellent performances, many of them are really mediocre and sometimes disappointing.

“They often work with Alison King since she is a really talented actor. However, I am aware that she becomes very tired.”

“You use them if you have the best centre forward on the field,” he said. And they do, along with Gregson’s Simon. They are good; they sometimes get flogged. I can only see him dying before he returns.

“How is Jim going to fit in now? TV has been submerged in a big puddle of PC woke s***e. You would have to radically alter him, take off all of his nuts. I was unable to play it.

It would be a betrayal of the character, who rose to legendary status, and of all “Corrie” writers, past and present. It is depressing. The persona should go on forever, in my opinion.”
