Famous for playing Simon Barlow on Coronation Street, Alex Bain has spoken out about leaving the show and that he would “miss” his character.

The 22-year-old actor is saying goodbye to the role of Simon, who fans have been seeing grow up on the streets of Weatherfield since 2003, after an amazing 16 years on the ITV soap opera. After overcoming Simon’s alcoholism, he and his father Peter Barlow (played by Chris Gascoyne) set sail for new adventures. This is a good twist to Simon’s plot.

In an interview with ITV, Alex discussed his long-running part and said, “Yes, I will miss Simon because we have spent so much time together over the past sixteen years.” We resemble opposite sides of a same coin, in a sense.”

He said with a sigh of relief: “I am so pleased that he has a happy ending, that he is literally sailing off into the sunset with his dad and there is hope for his future.”

Pointing out a benefit of his departure, he said, “I don’t have to mourn him since he hasn’t died. He is not incarcerated.

Rather, he sees a bright future for Simon, saying: “I can easily picture him hanging out with his dad, drinking orange juice on the boat in the middle of nowhere, having a lovely time. Their relationship is probably at its finest right now.”

Alex’s departure was marked by emotion; he revealed that filming his final scene was “incredibly emotional” and made much more memorable by the presence of his parents, who were there to see him spend his last minutes on set.

He said, looking back on his final day of filming, “It was really emotional, which makes sense because it has played such a significant role in my life.

“We filmed out of order, so my last scene that I filmed wasn’t Simon’s last scene in the show, but he was in Roy’s Rolls saying goodbye to Carla.”

“After my parents, Paul and Debra, attended to see the scene, the director graciously proposed that they serve as background performers in the cafe.
