The mystery flash-forward surprise from earlier in the year that has had viewers wondering is revisited in a new EastEnders teaser, which has Denise Fox (Diane Parish) in the lead role.

The teaser shows the well-known figure, who has been the focal point of this week’s Walford drama, seated in the Queen Vic’s bar while sporting the same green outfit that she wore in the flash-forward to Christmas 2023.

In the brief footage, the matriarch of the famous bar tosses a glass to the ground with a mocking expression on her face, watching it break while the bell behind the bar chimes, signalling that the end is drawing closer.

Then, we moved to a montage of the five more Walford ladies who were participating in the plot. On the official BBC One soap opera Twitter account, which uploaded the teaser, there was a tweet that stated, “For whom the bell tolls.”

But what does it all really mean?

As fans are aware, Denise participated in a lock-in in February along with Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean), Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth), Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), and Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal).

The women in question raised their last drink to all the men who had disappointed and wounded them over the years, hoping that one day they would get justice.

The six ladies were then shown in a flash-forward scene that took place around Christmastime and showed them standing over a dead man’s body that was lying on the bar floor while Sharon, who seemed to be on the day of her own wedding, appeared to be checking the man’s pulse.

The fatality was confirmed at the end of the stunning episode as the six ladies absorbed what had happened.

With a broken bottle in her hand and standing over the victim, Denise gave viewers reason to believe that she is the one who committed the assault. Could this be proof that this is the case after all now that the character has her own trailer?

Or is it just that the release of this teaser coincided with a dramatic high point in Denise’s storyline? In horrific circumstances, her romance with Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) was made public, and Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) intervened. Could one of these guys turn out to be the unlucky victim during the holidays?

Or should we anticipate that the remaining five Walford ladies will also have their own trailers? Maybe when their individual narratives are the main focus?

In the trailer’s image of Bridge Street, if you look attentively, you may even make out a person that, upon closer scrutiny, resembles Suki Panesar running away. Is she working along with Denise? Or maybe Denise defends her by killing Nish (Navin Chowdhry), who was being abusive.

Time will tell, but it’s reasonable to assume that EastEnders is back in the spotlight once again. And who can blame them, considering how captivating the programme is right now?

Monday through Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, EastEnders airs.
