It was recently announced that Matthew Wolfenden, who has played David Metcalfe for 17 years, will be leaving Emmerdale.
According to a cited source, Matthew was looking for new acting possibilities outside of the Dales since he hadn’t been receiving any “gritty storylines” lately.
Throughout his tenure in Emmerdale, Matthew has been a part of a number of nasty stories. One such tale included Joe Warren Plant’s character, Maya Stepney (Louisa Clein), who was involved in a severe case of child abuse. During Meena Jutla’s (Paige Sandhu) violent rampage across the hamlet, David’s life was also in danger.
His latest stories have often focused on his financial difficulties as he battled to maintain the existence of the store that carries his name. This caused him to make some bad choices, such trying to pass off a speeding ticket he received as belonging to his wife Victoria (Isabel Hodgins).
Following this difficult period, David and Victoria’s relationship never fully healed, and they have been living separate lives ever since. Victoria has focused on her work at the Hide, but David, who was unable to keep the store solvent without Eric’s money, is still working with his father, Eric (Chris Chittell), at the shop.
There is much conjecture over the character’s fate after leaving; will he be killed off or will the door remain open for him to return?
Victoria may have had something to do with David’s leaving, since it seems that he will attempt to reignite their relationship in future episodes.
One person who isn’t delighted with David realising he still has strong love for his ex is Jacob. Is he going to get in the way of real love?
And what will Victoria think of David’s passionate declaration? Though she’s previously been quite adamant in stating that she doesn’t see them together in the future, is she going to alter her mind?
It’s possible that David is headed for further heartache, or that he may eventually find happiness. It’s going to be dramatic either way.
