Emmerdale star quits show after 17 years and ‘could be killed off’ as bosses plan exit

As the actor gets ready to say farewell to the community, Matthew Wolfenden, who plays David Metcalfe, might be killed off in yet-to-be-shot sequences.

David Metcalfe’s actor Matthew Wolfenden is quitting the serial opera Emmerdale.

The TV favorite has lived in the community since 2006, but it has recently been reported that he will be moving on to greener pastures after feeling “ready for a change.”

Matthew, 43, has admitted to his pals that he has grown “bored” of the storylines he has been experiencing lately.

He wants to “see what else is out there” after “not getting any gritty storylines,” a TV insider told The Sun.

“He’s excited about the opportunities available,” they continued. He very recently announced his departure, so the writers are still planning his on-screen goodbye. There’s a chance David won’t survive.

He has experienced numerous difficult stories throughout his time on the soap opera, but as he gets set to leave, he is prepared for his final one.

In response to an enquiry by ITV two years ago about charges of a statement to a mixed-race actress and claims that her accent was imitated, Matthew took a break from the serial opera for a while.

The purported comment and imitation were described as “misheard” by Matthew and his co-star Isabel, who portrays Victoria Sugden, and no official action was taken against the pair.

They were filming a scene in which Victoria was supposed to jump from a waterfall at the time of the inquiry, giving them both some time away from the camera.

In other gruesome plots, Victoria was one of David’s primary targets when she was planning to kill Meena Jutla, but she was able to escape.

Outside of the soap opera, Matthew married Charley Webb, who portrayed Debbie Dingle in 2018, after they had dated in 2007 and had a kid together.

After a brief breakup, they rekindled their relationship and welcomed two more children.

Charley left the program last year and has since prioritized her family while participating in other engagements, including as James Graham’s Quiz’s UK tour.

Matthew’s final day of filming has not yet been determined.
